Scrawlr Box review- January

Scrawlr is an art supply subscription box, who I stumbled upon online. It is £15 monthly, with free UK shipping, and can  be bought here. I mainly work with paints, so this box didn't suit me perfectly, but I really wanted to try working with different mediums! There is a featured artist each month, and a theme with a challenge to create a piece of art using only the materials in the box. The theme this month was 'abstract', which was absolutely perfect for me and my preferred ways of working within art.

One of the items in the box which I was most pleased with was the Koh-I-Noor 2mm clutch pencil, which is a refillable mechanical pencil, and is great for sketching with! The contents also included two black markers, of varying thicknesses, a grey marker and a pack of coloured markers.

The suggested task this month was to 'take your pencil for a walk across the page', and then pick out shapes within it to outline with the markers. The colours I used on mine (above), ended up looking quite Mondrian- like. I think I am going to use the markers to speed sketch people more when I am out and about, now that life drawing has helped improve my confidence with drawing!
Would you ever try an art subscription box?

  1. Nice sketch, I'm not so much of an artsy person but I like the idea.

  2. This is a great idea for those artsy people. I love how you pen walked across the page by the way!
